Melissa attended Wright City and Wilburton High Schools. She graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in May 1995 with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Elementary Education. After teaching for several years, she returned to SOSU to obtain her Master's degree in School Administration, which she earned in July of 2011.
Melissa has both a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Master's degree in School Administration from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. She has certifications in elementary education, family and consumer sciences, elementary principalship, and secondary principalship.
Melissa has been trained and certified in Great Expectations, Capturing Kids' Hearts, Literacy First, Voyager, and Oklahoma Teacher & Leader Effectiveness (OKTLE).
Melissa first became employed with Tishomingo Schools in August 2006. She began her Tishomingo career teaching third grade for one year, then soon moved up to fourth grade where she taught for four years. After five years at the elementary school, she moved up to the middle school to teach one year of fifth grade, concluding her Tishomingo teaching experience with six years of service in the district. She briefly left to get adminstrative experience as an assistant principal in Lone Grove for two years, before returning to Tishomingo Elementary as principal in June 2014. She now has a total of 21 years experience in education, with 5 years of that being in school administration.
Melissa came to Tishomingo from her hometown of Wright City, where she was employed with the local school system for ten years. She began her employment as a teachers' assistant for two and a half years. Wright City then hired her as an alternative education and director of the program. After three years in that position, she was moved to the elementary where she taught third grade for 4 years. In June of 2006, her family moved to Tishomingo where she and her husband served as youth pastors of a local church.
After six years of teaching at Tishomingo, Melissa went to Lone Grove in August 2012 to acquire experience as an administrator. While there, she served as an assistant principal at Lone Grove Primary and Intermediate Schools for two years. In June of 2014, she returned to her beloved Tishomingo to serve the students and staff as principal of Tishomingo Elementary School. She is beginning her 4th year as elementary principal and 12th year with TIshomingo Schools.
Melissa has been married to her high school sweetheart, Robert, since September of 1988. Robert is a science teacher and coach at Marietta Schools. Together, they have three sons, Jeremy, Derek, and Greg Ferguson, all graduates of Tishomingo High School. Derek is married to his bride of 8 years, Dana, and together they have a son, Gunner. Greg, a ranch manager, is married to his wife, Kathy Jo, who is an RN nurse with the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, and together they have a son, Daniel. Jeremy is a public relations specialist for the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. He is engaged to Gabriella Smith and they will be married in December 2017. The Ferguson family also has a 14 year old dachshund, Miss Kami!
When Melissa is not at the school, she loves spending time with her family. Their favorite memories have been made when traveling as a family. Together, they have been to Germany, Italy, France, Disney World, Destin, San Antonio, Boston, Connecticut, Maine, Canada, South Carolina, the Grand Canyon, Miami, the Florida Keys, the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Matamorros and Cancun in Mexico, Gulf Shores, Colorado, Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons and South Padre Island in Texas. Mrs. Ferguson is only 1 state shy of seeing the entire United States of America! She is hoping to visit that 50th state next summer!
Robert and Melissa can be found keeping the highways hot as they travel to see their precious grandons, Gunner, who lives with his mommy and daddy in Lexington, Oklahoma, and their newest grandson, Daniel, who lives with his mommy and daddy in Coleman, Oklahoma!
